How to Get More Referrals
Q: How do you get more referrals? 🤔
A word-of-mouth practice isn't luck.
It's the natural outcome of authentic relationships that have been cared for.
After a lifetime in the service industry (Ten years in restaurants and 20+ in bodywork), I’ve come to believe that referrals come down to a few things:
Making your work easy to talk about.
A referral ecosystem of clients and other professionals/ practitioners who get what you do
Staying warm with the people inside it.
Here's the breakdown…
1. Make Your Work Easy to Talk About
Your clients probably love you. So why aren’t they telling everyone they know about you?
Before people can refer you, they need to understand what you do—and be able to explain it simply.
You know your work deeply, but clients don’t need the whole story. They need one sentence that makes them think, “Oh, I know exactly who needs this.”
Think about the practitioners you recommend. You don’t explain every technique. You say:
“She’s the one I’d send anyone with fertility stuff to.”
“He’s amazing with helping athletes get out of pain.”
Simple. Specific. Repeatable.
2. Build Relationships Beyond Your Treatment Room
Client referrals are powerful. Practitioner referrals can snowball.
When another professional recommends you, trust is transferred.
→Make a list of practitioners whose work overlaps with yours. Meet them. Learn about their work. Share yours. Trade sessions when appropriate. Build real, authentic two-way relationships.
Stay Connected, Quietly (This Is Warm Marketing)
Referrals happen because someone remembers you at the right moment.
Stay connected with past clients and referral partners through simple, genuine touchpoints: a seasonal check-in, helpful email, thank-you card, or thoughtful gift.
Small, consistent contact keeps you top of mind.
